Barnwood church bells repair appeal launched

A Gloucestershire church has launched an appeal to save its bells which date back to 1698.

Bell ringers at St Lawrence Church in Barnwood need to raise £30,000 to repair the set of eight bells.

During the 1960s a metal coating was put on the clappers which has caused indentations in the bells and they are now in danger of cracking.

"They've rung there for 300 years and we don't want that to stop," said tower captain Frances Mulvey.

Already £12,000 has been raised before the appeal's official launch on Saturday.
