Street pastor patrols increased in Cheltenham

Street pastors in Cheltenham will be putting on extra patrols over the Christmas and the new year.

The group of volunteers, which are backed by the town's police, civic leaders and local churches, has been operational for two years.

During this time more than 50 people have been commissioned as street pastors from 25 churches and offer practical help for revellers.

They also hand out water, flip-flops and blankets.

A spokesman for Cheltenham Street Pastors says they are very much part of the night time scene.

"The scheme helps to reduce crime by acting as a safety net especially to vulnerable people who may become casualties."
