'Beer goggles' driving test offered in Gloucester

People in Gloucester will be able to see the effect drinking has on their driving by donning "beer goggles" to drive a go-kart.

The specially-designed goggles recreate the visual distortion, loss of perception and lack of control that impair drink-drivers.

Safer Gloucester has organised the event to coincide with BRAKE Road Safety week and Alcohol Awareness Week.

Anyone aged over 12 can have a go if they can reach the pedals.

Ch Insp Richard Burge, of Gloucestershire Police, said: "Over the festive season, many people will be enjoying a night out socialising and celebrating and most will plan to get home safely by taking a bus or taxi.

"Sadly some will take the risk of driving whilst thinking they are under the limit, but putting themselves and others at risk. Some people could still be over the limit the next morning.

"The only safe way is to adopt a personal zero limit and avoid drinking any alcohol at all if you are driving."

Safer Gloucester chairman Jennie Dallimore said: "This event will enable everyone to see for themselves just how their driving skills are affected.

"This should be a great evening, with a serious message and I would encourage everyone, young and old, to come along."

The event, organised with Concession Cirkitz International, takes place on Friday.
