A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a male cyclist was killed in a suspected hit-and-run.

The crash happened on the B4072, Stroud Road, near St Barnabas church, at about 07:00 BST, and involved a black BMW.

A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said the vehicle was driven off but recovered nearby soon afterwards.

He said the man arrested was believed to be the driver. The victim has yet to be identified.

"One of our lines of enquiry is that we believe there was more than one occupant of the BMW and we are currently looking for others who may have been in the car," the force spokesman added.

"If any one has any information about the BMW, which was seen driving around Gloucester from 05:00 BST today [Friday], or anything else linked to the incident they are asked to call 101."

The A4173 stretch of Stroud Road was closed for nearly eight hours while the circumstances of the accident were investigated.
