Neighbours have disturbed an attempt by thieves to carry out a ram-raid at a bank in Gloucestershire.

Lloyds Bank in Bourton-on-the-Water was targeted by men in balaclavas at about 04:00 BST.

Gloucestershire Police said a JCB stolen from a local farm was used to ram the historic stone building.

Residents came across the culprits in the act who fled, leaving the cash behind them, police said. As they escaped they smashed into a parked BMW.

The car had been parked overnight in the Kingsbridge pub car park and was blocking their exit.

A stolen Mitsubishi pickup and a stolen Landrover Freelander were also used in the raid.

The High Street bank is the last one in the Gloucestershire village and is one of 100 that Lloyds is planning to close across the UK between July and October.
