Cyclist dies after crash with bus by Southsea pier

A cyclist has died after she was in collision with a bus in Portsmouth.

The woman, thought to be in her 40s, was cycling by Clarence Pier in Southsea at about 1315 BST on Saturday when the accident happened.

She was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital but later died. Police appealed for anyone who knew who she was to contact them.

The driver of the bus, a Portsmouth man aged 53, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

He was shocked but not injured and no passengers were hurt.

The number 700 single-decker Stagecoach service was en-route from Brighton to Portsmouth and was passing through Southsea when the crash happened at the roundabout by the bottom of Pier Road.

Pc Phil Hunt said the area around the pier was very busy on Saturday afternoon and he appealed for any witnesses to get in touch.

He said: "We are also trying to trace the passengers, who left the scene before we could speak to them."
