Rescuers saved a total of six people, including an eight-year-old girl, from two sinking boats off the south coast.

A couple with their young daughter were rescued from their speedboat off Lee-on-the-Solent on Saturday afternoon. The sinking boat was towed to shore.

About 35 minutes earlier, two men and a woman were rescued from their sailing boat which capsized and sunk in choppy seas off Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

All six people were praised by coastguards for wearing life jackets.

Mark Southwell, from Cowes RNLI lifeboat, said: "It just demonstrates how effective these life jackets are in an emergency, just as airbags are in cars."
