A man reported to have received burns on the Isle of Wight has died in hospital, police have confirmed.

The 42-year-old man approached staff at a Sainsbury's store in Cowes High Street asking for help on 22 March. He said he had been involved in a fire.

He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Newport and later transferred to the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Police have said his death is not being treated as suspicious.

One line of inquiry involved a police investigation into a possible link between the man's injuries and a fire at a derelict bungalow on Princes Esplanade in Cowes, which happened at about the same time.

Police said they are not in a position to name the man as formal identification procedures have not been completed, and added an inquest will follow "in due course".
