Police are trying to reunite precious World War I documents and jewellery found in a bin with their owner.

A telegram, addressed to Miss Berry of Andover, was found with a newspaper cutting about Private Frank Berry who spent several months in the trenches.

They were discovered with a haul of necklaces, watches and brooches in Winchester Road, Southampton.

Police said inquiries in the Andover area have proved unsuccessful and they do not know if the items were stolen.

Helen Ward, burglary investigation coordinator, based at Hulse Road, said the items were discovered in January but all attempts to trace the owner had failed.

"There are obviously some really sentimental pieces here.

"We have no idea where or how these items came to be in a bin in Southampton or if they were stolen from a burglary in the city or elsewhere in the county," she said.
