Arrests after pedestrian killed in Portsmouth

A man has died after being struck by a car as he crossed the road in Portsmouth.

Matthew Bailey, from Gosport, was fatally injured on Park Road on Sunday at 0217 GMT.

Police said the man was narrowly missed by a Ford Focus, but then a Mini travelling behind the Ford collided with him.

A man and a woman, both 24 years old and both from Whitley, have been arrested and bailed.

Mr Bailey was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Mini, a 24-year-old woman from Whitley and the driver of the Ford, a 24-year-old man from Whitley were uninjured.

A 24-year-old Whitley woman was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She has been bailed until 1 March, 2011.

A 24-year-old Whitley man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and dangerous driving. He has been bailed until 18 February, 2011.
