Southampton malaria nurse in court over sex attack

A male nurse who went missing while taking part in a malaria medical trial, sparking a police appeal, has appeared in court charged with sexual assault.

Matthew Lloyd, 35, from Shirley, who is also charged with common assault, did not enter a plea during the hearing at Southampton Magistrates' Court.

He is accused of attacking a 20-year-old woman in the city in August 2010.

He was bailed to appear at Southampton Crown Court on 3 March for a plea and case management hearing.

Mr Lloyd was taking part in a malaria clinical trial in Oxford but missed an appointment in October, prompting fears for his health.

He made contact with Dutch police 12 days later.
