Boy, five, bitten on face by dog in Southampton

A five-year-old boy had to be treated in hospital after a dog bit his face as he tried to stroke the animal.

The boy was walking with his father in Mayfield Park in Southampton on Sunday when the springer spaniel turned on him.

He was bitten on the upper left cheek and was taken to hospital where the wound was treated.

His father approached the dog's owner but said she denied it was her pet that had bitten the boy and walked off.

She was described as white, about 30 to 36 years old and wearing a black baseball cap and black fleece jacket.

The dog is predominately white with black dots or patches and a brown nose.

Police said it is too early to say whether the boy will be permanently scarred.
