Isle of Wight Red Jet ferry engine breaks on crossing
Almost 80 ferry passengers heading to the Isle of Wight had to be taken back to the mainland after engine failure.
The 1515 GMT Red Jet hi-speed service from Southampton to West Cowes was just minutes from docking when the captain made the announcement.
The half-hour service, carrying some schoolchildren, managed to make its own way back, with passengers transferring onto another service.
Six later crossings were cancelled. Operator Red Funnel has apologised.
A spokesman said: "Due to an engine problem with a Red Jet Hi-Speed ferry the 15:15 sailing from Southampton has had to return to its Southampton berth.
"All 77 passengers who were onboard have been transferred to the next available Red Jet sailing to West Cowes.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
