Southampton policeman hit and carried along by car

A police officer was struck by a car in Southampton and carried along before falling off as the car sped away.

The officer beckoned the driver to stop the Vauxhall Astra in Park Wall but it was driven into him at a slow speed, during the incident on Sunday.

He was lifted on to the bonnet, before the car accelerated and turned. The officer fell off and the car sped away.

Several members of the public rushed to help the officer and police would like to speak to them as witnesses.

Four occupants

Hampshire Constabulary said the officer had been wearing high-visibility clothing at the time. He was not badly hurt.

The car was later found abandoned near the Charlotte Place roundabout, on the slip road near St Andrews Road.

A spokesperson said: "Officers also believe there were four occupants in the vehicle and are appealing to anyone who knows who they are to contact them.

"They would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen those in the vehicle decamp from it and run off."
