Headstones and crosses at an Isle of Wight graveyard have been vandalised.

About £7,000 of damage was caused at Ryde Cemetery in West Street, with some items broken beyond repair.

Pc Dave Dovey, from Hampshire police, said it showed a "complete ignorance for the feelings of people who pay their respect to loved ones".

He said extra patrols have been set up in the area and asked anyone who saw anything suspicious late last Wednesday and Thursday to come forward.

Pc Dovey said: "Some of the damage is beyond repair, and we're determined that this lack of respect will not go unpunished."
