Man arrested after three women assaulted in Portsmouth

A man has been arrested after three assaults on women in Portsmouth.

Police are linking the attacks, which happened in the Baffins area of the city between 0600 and 0640 GMT Friday.

In one incident, a woman was pushed into a wall as she waited at a bus stop. Another woman was grabbed while she was jogging but managed to escape.

A third woman was followed into a house by a man who pushed her on to the floor. She broke free and the man ran off. A 22-year-old is being questioned.

'Clearly distressed'

The first incident happened in Baffins Road at about 0600 GMT. The 56-year-old victim was at a bus stop when a man grabbed her handbag and pushed her into a wall.

At about 0640 GMT a 40-year-old woman was assaulted while jogging around Baffins Pond. She alerted police from a nearby newsagents.

About five minutes later a woman was followed into a house in Silchester Road. Her attacker ran away towards Baffins Pond.

Police searched the area and arrested the 22-year-old man in Tangiers Road on suspicion of assault.

Detective Sergeant Mark Hall from Portsmouth CID said: "We believe all three incidents are linked.

"None of the women was seriously injured but they are clearly distressed at what's happened to them."

Police are appealing for witnesses.
