Woman and cat rescued from cliff in Isle of Wight

An 18-year-old woman was rescued after slipping nine metres (30ft) from a cliff ledge in the Isle of Wight while trying to save her cat.

Solent Coastguard co-ordinated the rescue after receiving a 999 call just before 1900 GMT on Wednesday.

Ventnor and Needles coastguard rescue team pulled the teenager back up the cliff at Atherfield Point using a stretcher. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

The cat was recovered safe and well.

Matthew West, from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, said: "This woman was incredibly lucky to be rescued with relatively minor injuries.

"We know it's worrying when pets go missing but cliffs are dangerous places, particularly in the dark."
