People in Hampshire town assured over brown water

People in a Hampshire town have reported brown water coming out of their taps.

Southern Water has assured residents in the Chandler's Ford area that the discolouration has been caused by iron deposits which are not harmful.

The problem started earlier and has been blamed on works where two valves were changed on a water main in Castle Lane on Thursday night.

Customers have been advised to run their taps until the water runs clear.

A Southern Water spokesman said: "We apologise for causing concern to those customers affected.

"Water discolouration is usually caused by iron deposits being disturbed in the pipes, often following burst mains or when large quantities of water are taken from the network.

"As water travels through the network of pipes on its way to customers, it can become discoloured, appearing orange or brown in colour.

"While this is rare and harmless to health, it can cause concern to customers and generate complaints."
