Boy, four, bitten on face by dog on Southampton common

A four-year-old boy had to have a number of stitches after he was bitten on the face by a dog.

The child was walking with his 27-year-old mother on Southampton common when the Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog attacked him.

No owner was seen in the area and police are looking into whether the animal could be a stray.

The boy was taken to hospital on Thursday and had a number of stitches under his left eye.

He was later released and is recovering at home.

The dog is described as being brindle in colour and had a flash of white on its back by its tail.

Officers asked for anyone with information about the dog or witnesses to the attack to come forward.
