Fishermen rescued after boat capsizes in Southampton Water

Four local fishermen were rescued after their boat took on water and sank in Southampton Water.

They were spotted in the water by the crew of another boat who helped them and contacted the coastguard on Saturday afternoon.

Hamble independent lifeboat was called and took the men to the Hamble harbour master pontoon where they were met by coastguards who offered first aid.

The men were in the water for about 10 minutes and were cold but not hurt.

A spokesman for Hamble lifeboat said the group had purchased the boat during the weekend and this was its first trip out.

The skipper had told him that all was well until a hatch lifted as they went down Southampton water. Without the hatch cover in place, water rushed into the boat so fast that the crew were unable to send a Mayday before it sank.

They used the whistles on their lifejackets to attract the attention of a passing vessel.
