Southsea gun alert: Man arrested
A man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm after armed police responded to reports of an armed man in a Portsmouth street.
Armed officers went to Victoria Road South in Southsea just before 1600 BST after a man was seen sitting next to a firearm.
Road closures were put in place and a man, 23, was arrested about 20 minutes later and taken for questioning.
Police also seized a weapon at the scene. No shots were fired.
Acting Insp Wendie Douglas said: "I would like to thank local residents for their co-operation during our enquiries.
"Although our investigation is ongoing at the moment, I would like to take this opportunity to remind people about the risks of carrying imitation firearms in public.
"It's difficult, even for firearms experts, to distinguish between a fake gun and a real weapon from a distance.
"Often, it's only once the gun is retrieved that officers are able to confirm it is an imitation or BB gun."
