Portsmouth Harbour plea man 'fell off ferry'

A man heard crying for help in Portsmouth Harbour had fallen off a ferry, police said.

The alarm was raised on Sunday evening but a search was later stood down when nothing was found and it is unclear whether the man made it to safety.

Police said he fell off an inbound Wightlink ferry from Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight.

Officers are trying to trace witnesses, including a young couple with a video camera at the Hot Walls in Portsmouth.

The incident is not being treated a suspicious, a police spokeswoman said.

Det Con Allison Fraser said: "We are extremely keen to get in touch with this couple as they may have seen and filmed what happened.

"We would also like to speak to any foot passengers who travelled to the island on the 17:00 BST sailing from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and any foot passengers on the return journey at 18:00 BST from Fishbourne."

The search had involved three lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter and a police boat.

Boats coming into and out of the port have been asked to keep a lookout for anything unusual in the water.
