A main road in Southampton is to remain shut after part of a building that was being demolished collapsed.

Police were called on Monday morning following reports of rubble falling into Grosvenor Square.

The adjoining Cumberland Place was closed both ways and could remain shut until Wednesday.

A diversion through Bedford Place has been set up but motorists have been warned to expect severe delays as they travel through the area.

No-one was injured but police described the building as "quite unstable". It is being assessed by structural experts.

Eyewitnesses said part of the six-storey building was hanging over the edge of the pavement.

Southampton-based Wessex Demolition & Salvage, which is carrying out the work, has yet to comment.
