A bicycle left on rail tracks in Hampshire in the early hours of Saturday caused a "blinding explosion", British Transport Police (BTP) said.

Officers have released CCTV images of the incident in Bedhampton which they say could have derailed the train.

They say two youths were seen pushing the bike onto the tracks, possibly deliberately.

Two hours later, the bike was struck by the 03:34 GMT Southern service from Barnham to Portsmouth and Southsea.

Inspector Mick Morriss said: "Through sheer luck, no-one was injured and the train was relatively undamaged, but the consequences could have been far worse."

Network Rail said the incident caused delays for passengers.
