Man jumps into Southampton river to flee police

A man who jumped into a river to get away from police in Southampton has been rescued by a lifeboat crew.

Solent Coastguard said the man had jumped into the River Itchen from Marine Parade, near the Itchen Bridge in Southampton, at 02:20 BST.

He was in the water for an hour and was found semi-conscious in shallow water clinging to a mooring buoy and taken to hospital with hypothermia.

Hampshire police said another man was arrested on suspicion of theft.

Crews in Calshot lifeboat found the man in the water and gave him medical treatment until paramedics arrived.

Coastguard helmsman Tom Pedersen said: "The casualty was suffering as a result of being in the water for so long and it was lucky that we were able to locate him quickly otherwise the outcome could have been much worse."
