Woman dies in flat fire in Stubbington

A woman has been found dead following a fire at a block of flats in Hampshire.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue crews were called to a "fully developed" fire at a ground floor flat at Marks Road, Stubbington, late on Sunday evening.

Twenty firefighters extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes. A body was subsequently found in the flat.

Another woman was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

The fire service's area manager Steve Foye said: "This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the woman's family at this time.

"Our firefighters managed to bring the fire under control and extinguish it in the face of extreme conditions but were sadly unable to save the woman."

A joint investigation between the fire service and Hampshire Constabulary is taking place.
