Fareham fire: Elderly lady shuts door on burning kitchen

An elderly woman with mobility issues was advised to shut the door on a fire until her rescuers arrived.

The 83-year-old woman rang for help on Sunday, but could not leave her house as flames spread across her kitchen.

Station manager Rob Cole said: "The occupant was on the phone speaking to our control room operators who advised her to shut the door and open the windows of the room she was in."

The woman, from Fareham, Hampshire, was unharmed and "very grateful", he said.

Crews put out the fire on arrival, which was caused by an oven grill being left on.

Realising the woman had difficulty getting around, the Hampshire Fire and Rescue control room operators reassured her until a Fareham fire crew arrived.

Mr Cole added: "For a situation like this we would echo the advice the control room operators gave: call 999, get yourself into a room furthest away from the fire, shut the door and open the windows of the room."
