Hundreds of Isle of Wight properties hit by power cut

Hundreds of properties were without electricity on the Isle of Wight after strong winds damaged overhead lines

Southern Electric said a fault had caused a high voltage network to trip at 08:45 GMT causing a power cut in the centre and south east of the island.

The firm said initially 1,300 of its customers were offline, mainly around Newport, Ventnor and Sandown.

A spokeswoman for Southern Electric said engineers had since managed to re-connect supplies to all homes.
