The death of an elderly man who was crushed by a falling tree on Southampton Common was an accident, a coroner has ruled

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spent more than an hour freeing Clive Denton, 85, after the tree fell on him at about 13.00 BST on 6 August.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died.

An inquest held at Winchester Coroner's Court returned a verdict of accidental death.

Southampton City Council, which manages the common, called Mr Denton's death a "tragic and unforeseen accident".

"Naturally our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of this popular and well respected local gentleman," a spokesman added.

A Health and Safety Executive investigation into Mr Denton's death is continuing.
