IPCC investigates woman's death in Southampton police cell

The death of a woman in a police station cell is being investigated by the police watchdog.

According to The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) the 48-year-old died whilst in a Hampshire Constabulary custody suite in Southampton on 1 November.

Commissioner Jan Williams said the IPCC wanted to find out whether officers had followed the correct procedures.

The woman has not been named, though a post-mortem exam has taken place.

An ambulance was called at 07:15 on Saturday when police discovered she was not breathing.

She was pronounced dead at Southampton General Hospital at 08:25.

The IPCC said it would "examine all the circumstances surrounding the woman's detention and death".
