Tattoo hygiene rating scheme introduced in Portsmouth

A new scheme to rate hygiene at tattoo businesses in Portsmouth has been announced.

The system, similar to that used in restaurant inspections, will rate the premises from one to three.

Portsmouth City Council said it hoped it would drive out unsafe tattooists who often operate from home.

It comes after a 13-year-old schoolgirl was illegally tattooed in the city with an "amateurish" design by an unlicensed artist.

The council said following the new inspections each business would receive a certificate and be rated for a year.
