Brittany Ferries missing passenger search abandoned

The coastguard "found nothing" in a search of the English Channel for a missing ferry passenger.

A search began at 07:20 GMT when a woman's belongings and passport were found on a ferry which left Portsmouth on Tuesday night.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said by 16:00 GMT "nothing had been found and the search was terminated".

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed it is investigating.

Brittany Ferries' Mont St Michel left Portsmouth at 22:45 GMT on Tuesday and arrived in Caen at 06:45.

It is "unlikely" the coastguard will continue the search on Thursday unless "new information" is found, the spokeswoman said.
