A thatched cottage in a picturesque Hampshire village has been destroyed by fire.

The "intense" blaze, reported shortly before 14:15 BST, is believed to have started on the first floor of the house in Longparish, near Andover.

Firefighters from nine stations spent the afternoon bringing the fire under control and managed to salvage many items from the house.

An investigation into the cause is under way.

Hampshire Fire & Rescue said a crew would remain at the property throughout the evening to ensure the fire did not reignite.

Area manager Jason Avery said: "Our firefighters have been working hard to extinguish the fire in this property.

"The crews have done a fantastic job in salvaging contents of the house whilst fighting the fire from outside."
