A convicted sex offender who climbed a fence to escape a secure hospital before going on the run has been found.

Stephen Munden left the grounds of Mildmay Oaks in Winchfield, near Hook in Hampshire, on Tuesday evening.

Hampshire Constabulary said the 54-year-old handed himself into police in the Thames Valley at about 00:45 GMT.

He was given a hospital order in 2014 after being convicted of sexually assaulting a child and possessing indecent images of children.

A police spokesman said: "He has been detained and taken to a mental health facility."

Munden was described by police as a "vulnerable adult" with mental health treatment needs.

Hospital operators Partnerships in Care (PIC) said Munden was held in a locked ward inside the hospital and kept under supervision when outside.
