An elderly man strangled a woman before killing himself, a post mortem examination has found.

The bodies of Jean Irwin, 83, and John Irwin, 77, were discovered by officers at an address in Albert Road, Shanklin, on the Isle of Wight, on Monday.

Hampshire Constabulary said it was treating Jean's death as murder and John's death as "non-suspicious".

The exact circumstances of the pensioners' deaths are being investigated by the coroner.

A police spokesman said: "The post mortem examination of Jean found death was from neck compression, while John died from ligature suspension.

"The family, who continue to be supported by specialist officers, has asked for privacy at this very difficult time."

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.
