Hereford park and ride scheme on hold

A park and ride scheme for Hereford has been put on hold due to government spending cuts, a council says.

Herefordshire Council said the £6bn of savings needed to be made nationally this financial year meant a cut of £570,000 to its transport budget.

A proposal for the park and ride scheme was discussed in 2008 with the preferred site being on land at Hereford Racecourse.

The Christmas park and ride scheme will go ahead as planned, a spokesman said.

Councillor Brian Wilcox, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "If the scheme had gone ahead, there would have been a substantial revenue implication year-on-year to subsidise the scheme.

"The temporary placing of the proposals on hold has released sufficient funding to address the majority of cuts in the highways budget."
