Hereford conman defrauded woman in her 80s

A man has been sentenced after admitting stealing £18,000 from a woman in her 80s.

Alfred Johns, 51, of Hereford, pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud.

After the hearing police said his victim had given him money when he claimed he knew a solicitor who would help her with a civil dispute.

Johns was jailed for 17 months for fraud and unrelated offences including possessing a shotgun without a licence.

He was also sentenced for handling stolen goods.

Det Con Nigel Cleeton said Johns, of Pool Head Cottage, had taken money off his victim on seven occasions, and taken legal papers relating to her dispute.

"Thankfully, his victim, who had become suspicious of him, contacted police and we were waiting for Johns the next time he turned up, no doubt to try and squeeze even more money from his victim," he said.

Police said the fraud took place in January and February.
