Serious accident shuts M42 northbound in Worcestershire

Motorists were advised to avoid the M42 northbound after an accident forced the closure of the carriageway.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 15:50 BST by a member of the public who dialled 999 from a motorway service area.

It was closed between junctions 1, Catshill and 2, Alvechurch in Worcestershire.

One driver has been airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries. The carriageway has since reopened.

West Midlands Police said the number of vehicles involved was yet to be established as were the exact number of casualties, although a small van and a car are thought to be involved.
