Redditch homes 'targeted' by lead thieves

Thieves in Worcestershire attempted to strip lead from the roofs of homes before being disturbed by a resident, police say.

Officers were called to Cedar Road, Redditch, at 05:00 BST on Wednesday.

An elderly woman had spotted two men taking lead flashing from her bungalow roof. She challenged them and they ran off towards the town centre.

Police said five properties were targeted and a quantity of lead was recovered in the road.

A police spokesman said they were unable to locate the men and were now appealing for witnesses.

Insp Ian Joseph said: "This is the latest in a series of metal thefts across the district.

"Our patrols are on the lookout for this type of offence but we need everyone to remain vigilant and to contact us if they see it happening or notice suspicious activity on roofs."
