Worcester footballer Lee Smith in 'racist tweet' probe

Worcester City Football Club has suspended one of its players after he posted an alleged racist remark on Twitter.

A tweet, from striker Lee Smith's account, prompted other users to accuse him of "spreading hatred".

Colin Layland, the club's vice-chairman, said: "We discussed the allegation made and a letter from the board has been sent advising him that he is suspended."

Smith was not available for comment.

The alleged comment has since been removed from Twitter, and Smith has apparently apologised.

On Monday a tweet from his account said: "Well here's the truth I'm NO RACIST OR FASCIST and if any1 who I have offended then I'm sorry ok."

Smith, who lives in Gloucestershire, joined the club in September from Nuneaton Town.

Gloucestershire Police has confirmed it is looking into the alleged comments and liaising with West Mercia Police and the football club.
