More than 40 police officers are investigating a suspicious fire at a flat in which a person died.

Firefighters were called at 04:00 GMT to a blaze in Chedworth Close, Worcester, Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said.

West Mercia Police said it was treating the fire as suspicious.

Det Supt Daryn Elton said: "Although we are at an early stage in our inquiries, we are confident this is a case of arson."

Officers have been unable to confirm if the person killed in the fire was male or female because of the severity of the blaze.

The police described the crime scene as "very difficult and challenging".

'Major incident'

Specialist investigators from the Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and the Forensic Science Service are working to establish the cause of the fire and the identify of the person found at the flat.

Officers from the West Mercia Police major incident team are also involved, the spokesman added.

The fire was so severe, forensic officers could not get into the flat until later on Wednesday.

The police said officers had been carrying out house-to-house inquires.
