Herefordshire Heartstart first aid charity 'saved' by grant

A Herefordshire charity that trains people in basic first aid and emergency life support skills says it has been saved by a £5,000 grant.

Herefordshire Heartstart, an initiative of the British Heart Foundation, was awarded the grant by the Eveson Charitable Trust.

The money will be used to help continue to fund free courses across the county.

A charity spokeswoman said it had faced closure with just six months worth of funding left.

"As a small county-based charity, we rely heavily on grants from charitable trusts and public donations to keep this vital service running," charity co-ordinator Loraine Coleman said.

"There is now increasing competition from other local and national charities for funding, which makes it more difficult to access funding.

"Yet what we offer can literally mean the difference between life or death."
