London 2012: Torch due at Worcestershire County Cricket Club

The evening celebration of the Olympic torch relay being in Worcester will be held at the county cricket club.

Music performances and light shows will take place on 24 May at the New Road ground, where the torch will light a celebration cauldron.

Details of how people can get free tickets for the event will be announced in the coming weeks.

The torch would "shine a light across Worcester" to celebrate its culture and heritage, the city council said.

Thousands of people are due to attend the event, which will take place on day six of the relay, a 70-day tour of 1,018 locations around the UK.

It will culminate in the arrival of the torch at the Olympic Stadium in London on 27 July.

Cricket club chief executive David Leatherdale said: "We are immensely excited to be able to play a part in bringing the Olympic spirit to Worcester.

"With our experience of hosting major events we look forward to welcoming local people to what promises to be an unforgettable evening of entertainment."

Council leader Simon Geraghty said he was delighted the cricket club had been confirmed as the venue for the "once-in-a-lifetime celebration" of the arrival of the torch in the city.

He said: "I know it will be the perfect venue as the eyes of the world turn to Worcester."
