Perdiswell Golf Course's damaged tunnel to be repaired

The Environment Agency (EA) is providing more than £1m to repair a damaged tunnel that runs under a Worcestershire golf course.

Worcester City Council is getting £1,156,000 from the Regional and Coastal Committee to fix the area under Perdiswell Golf Course.

The council said the repairs were badly needed and could take up to four years.

The EA said contaminated water had been leaking through cracks in the tunnel into Barbourne Brook.

A spokesperson from the EA said: "The site was fenced off as a precaution in August for health and safety reasons around the stability of the land.

"Although the water contamination is a long standing problem, it has remained within acceptable levels."

The council said it was thought the source of the contamination was waste from a nearby former landfill site and the EA would continue to test and monitor the water.

The site will be assessed in March to decide whether the culvert will be strengthened or replaced.
