Plans to put a life-sized statue of a bull in the centre of Hereford have been approved despite objections from the civic society.

The 1.6m (5.2 ft) high statue will stand next to the Old House Museum in Hereford's High Town.

Hereford Civic Society were concerned that trees would have to be removed to make way for the bull which they said would "add to the street clutter".

Herefordshire Council planning committee turned down their objections.

The bronze statue, which is being funded by an anonymous local benefactor, will be in place by the summer.

The Hereford breed of cattle is one of the UK's oldest, dating back to the mid 1700s.

The city's football club, Hereford United, are known as The Bulls.
