Ballingham thieves try to steal red telephone box

Thieves tried to steal an old-fashioned style red telephone box in Ballingham, Herefordshire.

Two men in a red Ford Maverick attached chains around the phone box and were dragging it away at about 01:00 BST on Tuesday.

It was dragged for two miles before the chains broke and the car drove off, police said.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said the thieves were probably stealing the phone box to "sell it for scrap".

He said: "I can't think of any other reason why they were doing it. It seems like a sledgehammer-and-nut situation if they wanted to steal money from it."
