More than £1m is being spent repairing a Grade II-listed railway bridge.

Network Rail said "extensive" work was needed on the Worcester Foregate Street Bridge to preserve it for future years and "restore it to its former glory".

Initial work on the bridge found various steelwork sections had suffered extensive corrosion and its drainage system also needed looking at.

Officials said they were confident the £1.1m work would be completed by the end of January.

The railway bridge dominates Foregate Street, one of the main routes to the city centre.

Network Rail said it was working with Worcester City Council to minimise disruption on the road, especially during the Christmas Fayre between 29 November and 2 December.
