Attacked man dies after hitting head

A man has died after he was attacked in a Worcestershire street, fell to the ground and struck his head.

Police have not named the 50-year-old who was with his girlfriend when he was attacked in Sillins Avenue, Redditch, shortly before 12:30 GMT.

Detectives believe the man got into an argument with a group of people and was punched before hitting his head.

After hospital treatment at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry his life support machine was turned off.

'Terrible attack'

The man had been to the Kings Arms pub and was walking home when the argument took place.

Police said the victim was taken by ambulance to the Alexandra Hospital but later transferred to the Walsgrave Hospital.

Det Insp Adam Hartwright, of West Mercia Police, said: "This was a terrible attack on an innocent man which has led to him losing his life.

"We believe there may have been between four and six people in the group who carried out the assault.

"This group may have been a mixture of males and females.

"We would appeal to anyone who can shed any light on the circumstances of the attack to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

Mr Hartwright said the public's help was "vital in making sure we have a full picture of what went on".
