Two girls injured in stolen car crash in Scunthorpe

Two teenage girls have been injured after the stolen car they were travelling in crashed in Scunthorpe.

The BMW was on the A18 when it crashed into a wall and came to rest in the Homebase car park on the Lakeside Retail Park just before 0400 BST.

The crash happened while the BMW and another car were being followed by police having being reported stolen.

Humberside Police said the girls had been arrested but were being treated at Scunthorpe General Hospital.

Delays expected

One of them, an 18-year-old, has suffered a suspected broken pelvis and a fractured leg. The second girl is not thought to have been seriously hurt.

Police said the BMW and the other car, a Volkswagen Golf, were believed to have been stolen from the Isle of Axholme and were being followed by the force's helicopter.

Marked police cars were also following the vehicles but were not involved in an active pursuit, police said.

A spokesman said the Golf was found near the crash scene and officers were looking for the two males who fled the vehicle.

The crash led to a number of road closures and drivers in the area are being advised to expect delays.
