Machinery and equipment worth more than £1m from a former Grimsby chemical plant is being auctioned off.

The online auction features the stores and equipment from the Huntsman Group's site at Great Coates, which closed in 2009 with the loss of 200 jobs.

The Moody Lane site is to be redeveloped.

Scunthorpe auctioneers CJM Asset Management said the auction, which ends on Thursday, had attracted interest from as far afield as China.

Paul Cooper, from CJM, said: "This plant was one of the largest producers of titanium dioxide pigment, which is used in paint and plastics, in Europe.

"The value of the equipment is substantial, over a million pounds in total.

"Apart from the huge quantity, much of the kit is high value too. There are any number of motors, gearboxes and spares that would have cost thousands of pounds apiece."

Mr Cooper said there was a big demand for equipment and spares of this type from the Middle East, India and China, so the inquiries coming in from foreign firms was expected.

In total the auction extends to more than 700 lots.
